Preparing Trade Skills
Now that you know the colors, lets talk about preparing your character a bit. The first thing you need to do is spend just a little money on yourself. Just a small amount, do not panic. It is a pittance compared to that which will soon be in your own hands. If you are still skeptical, let me tell you right now that at level 22 I had over 100 gold and that was from me doing these tactics part time. I actually enjoyed doing them as well, it gave me this sense of power that I could so easily get the money I needed and I could get it in vast amounts.
Now, back to spending a little cash on yourself. You have to pick 2 trade skills and get your secondary skills... you know the ones; cooking and fishing in particular.
How fast do you want to make cash? Do you want to work a trade skill, where you are making items? At the bottom of the following descriptions is a complimentary trade skill that normally goes with the trade skill.
• Blacksmithing - Keep in mind you are going to make money slower. It is harder to sell that sword you can make when a ton of other people are selling it as well. Also, if you are on an established server, most of the lower level characters will have been equipped by their higher level characters using equipment better than you will be able to make right now. You will have a market, players will buy your goods, but it is a slow market in the early levels. Complimentary Trade Skill: Mining
• Enchanting is hard to level up, it costs a lot of money and is really only worth it financially at higher levels when you have done quests and worked your reputation with various groups. I highly suggest staying away from the enchanting right now, you can always come back later in game and pick up this one if you desire. At that point you will be better able to handle the money involved and you will have better access to the recipes desired by so many players. Complimentary Trade Skill: Tailoring
• Leather crafting Rogues and Hunters wear leather and hunters move to mail at level 40. So right there your customers are only a fraction. Again, as with blacksmithing, your items will not be as well as some of the others found and those other players may have equipment purchased for them by their main character(s). Complimentary Trade Skill: Skinning
• Skinning, this skill is used in leather crafting, some recipes in Blacksmithing, tailoring and engineering as well. This is a great skill to work as it requires you to skin the pelts off of animals. Animals which you will fight constantly. It levels up fast and the only money you have to spend is on the skill and a skinning knife. A great thing about this skill is that there are an incredible amount of animals you can skin in this game and many players that do not have skinning as a skill, so you will run into entire piles and trails of dead animals that have been left behind. You can just follow behind and skin away. Complimentary Trade Skill: Leather Crafting
• Mining, the ores used in mining is used in Blacksmithing and engineering. Mining is a great skill to level up just remember to smelt that ore and sell the bars, you will make other players happier. Especially the ones that do not have the ability to turn them into the bars they need. Mining will make you large amounts of money later on in game for you as you can then mine those nodes in the hardest parts of the game. The early level mining nodes are pretty plentiful and many players simply do not have a need for stacks of copper ore. Complimentary Trade Skill: Engineering, Blacksmithing
• Tailoring, like Blacksmithing and Enchanting, there is not much to sell. On newer servers you can make 8 and 10 slot bags that players will purchase, but if you are on an older more established server those 8 and 10 slot bags are easy to come by... and the 14 and 16 slot bags even easier. If you decide to give tailoring a whirl anyways, sell shirts. Yes shirts, it seems that no one ever thinks about selling shirts. On the auction house I have only seen a couple here and there, players want to buy shirts. It is a slow way of making money, but it is reliable. Last night I saw someone shouting for someone to make him a pink shirt for almost 2 hours. There is a market there that clearly is not being tapped into. Complimentary Trade Skill: Enchanting
• Alchemy, this skill will make you the big bucks. Especially at higher levels the recipes that drop will allow you to make potions that replenish health, mana, give you +15 agility for an hour, give you +2000 Armor for 3 minutes (Which sounds kind of lame until you face off against Domo in Molten Core). Your wares are not only needed one or two times since they are consumable people want them all the time. The skill will cost you a little to get started, but through the entire process your potions will sell. The lower level players have instances and raids they go on as well. Battlegrounds, health and mana potions are a huge help. Complimentary Trade Skill: Herbalism
• Herbalism, you need herbs to make potions in alchemy. So the herbs sell very well and very fast. On my server, Dreamfoil sells for 1 gold. Yes, each one, selling for 1 gold. Once again, alchemy items are consumed so there is a never ending market available to you to take advantage of. Plus rogues use fadeleaf and swift thistle for some of their abilities and as those are consumed as well you will have a massive rogue market to entertain. As rogues are a very popular class this will be a huge market that you may be able to tap into. Complimentary Trade Skill: Alchemy
• Engineering, from Dynamite, bullets, robot squirrels and even very odd trinkets. Engineering is a very fun and mostly PVP oriented trade skill. Most items can only be used by other engineers so a market for selling engineered goods is much smaller. If you are looking at making money, I would reccomend against getting this trade skill. Complimentary Trade Skill: Mining
On one of my characters I took Alchemy and Herbalism and on another I took Herbalism and Skinning. Those were the characters, out of all of my other combinations, who made the most money in the shortest amount of time. The Alchemy, Herbalism combination made the most money overall though.
So you have your 2 trade skills and what else? Oh yeah... go buy a fishing pole. Yes... a fishing pole. You are going to make money in all kinds of ways and fishing will help you as well. Ever hear of deviate fish? Some players have run around as Ninjas and Pirates. Those are not clothing they are wearing to make themselves appear this way. They ate a baked dish made from deviate fish... and like tailors and their shirts, players love this kind of stuff.
